Tagalong is a backpacker hostel plus café in Development Area, Gangtok, Sikkim. This project is to enable Tagalong to identify Zero Waste Solutions including waste water and energy efficiency, geared toward small establishments. This project was started on 6th October 2018
The audit was conducted in the month of October 2019. It was identified that Tagalong generates 10 kgs of waste per day out of which 60% is wet waste , 20% dry waste and 20% rejects ( very high).
The energy audit indicated that there could be roughly 35 % cost savings on installing appropriate hardware. There were no cost savings identified in the water audit as Sikkim provides direct fixed lines.
Based on segregation guidelines provided, Tagalong took the initiative of making the provision of 3 separate waste disposal streams i.e. wet, dry and rejects. Appropriate placements of the bins have brought appreciation from backpackers who visit the hostel/café premises
Preparing bins for Segregation
Wood salvaged from construction was used to create the signboard for Travel Café, which gives a zero-waste touch to the premises
We are now in the process of setting up of an indoor vermicompost unit and tying up with local scrap dealers to ensure that only less than 10 % of waste generated goes to landfill.
