Tagalong Backpackers

OBJECTIVES

Tagalong is a backpacker hostel plus café in Development Area, Gangtok, Sikkim. This project is to enable Tagalong to identify Zero Waste Solutions including waste water and energy efficiency, geared toward small establishments. This project was started on 6th October 2018

OUTCOMES :

1. ZERO WASTE AUDIT AND SOLUTION DESIGN

The audit was conducted in the month of October 2019. It was identified that Tagalong generates 10 kgs of waste per day out of which 60% is wet waste , 20% dry waste and  20% rejects ( very high).

The energy audit indicated that there could be roughly 35 % cost savings on installing appropriate hardware. There were no cost savings identified in the water audit as Sikkim provides direct fixed lines.

2. SEGREGATION

Based on segregation guidelines provided, Tagalong took the initiative of making the provision of 3 separate waste disposal streams i.e. wet, dry and rejects. Appropriate placements of the bins have brought appreciation from backpackers who visit the hostel/café premises

                                                                  Preparing bins for Segregation

3. NEW LIFE TO DISCARDED MATERIALS

Wood salvaged from construction was used to create the signboard for Travel Café, which gives a zero-waste touch to the premises

4. OTHER INITIATIVES

  • Salvaged Materials: At the onset of the construction of Travel Café, the promoters being eco-sensitive were able to salvage old wood and bricks and were successfully able to integrate it into their interior design
  • Paperless Billing – To reduce the usage of paper, billing has been avoided. For customers requiring the bill, the option of emailing online has been provided
  • Stainless Steel Straws – Plastic straws create a huge burden on the Earth. More than 23 billion straws per annum are produced which have no way of being recycled and eventually end up in the oceans. Stainless Steel Straws are an effective way of reusing straws and are 100% recyclable too.
  • Cloth Napkins – This initiative was taken to replace the use of tissue paper. Additionally, it provided additional branding scope for Tagalong as a Zero Waste conscious business.
  • In House Baking – By producing their own breads, Tagalong has effectively reduced any plastics arising from purchasing of the same.

PHASE II

We are now in the process of setting up of an indoor vermicompost unit and tying up with local scrap dealers to ensure that only less than 10 % of waste generated goes to landfill.
